Car design is like fashion, through history it continually changes be it for the better or for the worse. Designs tend to follow popular culture and ideas of the time period. That is why I will always have a love for tail fins.
It was the late 1950's the country was on top of the world. America had emerged WWII unscathed. A superpower. The beat of the country was the sound of rockets as they thrusted towards the edges of our atmosphere. The designers in the car industry capitalized on this new found love for the extraterrestrial with designs more futuristic and optimistic than the country had ever seen. Cars like the Cadillac Cyclone Concept had so much charisma it looked like it could take off and go to the moon.
The bygone era will forever be one of the greatest design exercises of excess. More tail fins, more chrome, more futuristic. Cars that could go to the moon driven by Buck Rodgers. The nation was on a high, the tail fins were even higher.

While I do love the fins, I'm more keen on the still round but less flamboyant late 40's/early 50's

I love most of the GM lineup in the 50's nothing still beats the Tri-Five Chevys though. 55 is probably my favorite of the trio

Yes sir! I had the joy of owning one back in 2001. Also had the heart break of totaling it. 18yearolds Jamison and 396's don't mix. Smoked that ricer civic until the drum brakes failed me

They are the Alfa Romeo BATs, cars designed to have the lowest possible drag coefficient. You can find out more about them here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfa_Rome…
